Long before the days of energy drinks, farmers and field workers consumed switchels or ‘haymaker’s punch’ to cool down on hot days. Originating in the Caribbean in the 15th century, these switchels were carried into the fields to keep workers hydrated and nourished.
Typically an effervescent blend of apple cider vinegar, ginger root and honey, switchels packs a punch of beneficial enzymes, probiotics and anti-inflammatory compounds that fortify digestion and immune health. Raw apple cider vinegar balances pH levels, supports the gut microbiome and is rich in essential electrolytes. This DIY fermented beverage can be mixed up at home as a healthful mocktail and savoured within minutes.
